Melanotan I, also known as Afamelanotide, is a synthetic peptide that promotes melanin production in the skin, resulting in a tanned appearance. It was developed primarily to help prevent skin damage in people with certain photosensitive conditions, like erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). Unlike Melanotan II, it has fewer effects on sexual arousal and is generally considered to have a safer profile. Melanotan I is typically administered via subcutaneous injection and is approved in certain regions for medical use.
